Somehow before this year I had never actually had an energy bite. Yet, once I started breastfeeding I was searching for new recipes for two reasons. One, breastfeeding makes me extremely hungry. I’m talking wake up for a 2AM nursing session while also stuffing my face hungry. And two, I wanted to make sure I was eating ingredients that would be beneficial towards breastfeeding Camila. That’s when I first came across some lactation energy bite recipes and decided to give them a try. I’ve been hooked ever since!

Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Energy Bites
Now, before I go any further, let me warn you not to let the word “lactation” scare you off. These energy bites are definitely not solely for women who are nursing. There isn’t a single ingredient in them that would cause others to do something crazy like produce milk! They are just called “lactation” energy bites because many of the ingredients are beneficial to milk production if you happen to be breastfeeding. These beneficial ingredients include oats, flaxseed meal, peanut butter, and chia seeds. Obviously, these same ingredients have benefits to everyone else too!
After trying out a few different energy bite recipes I made some tweaks and added a few ingredients and I think I have finally perfected these delicious treats! Honestly, since I started making these peanut butter energy bites I haven’t gone longer than a day or two without replenishing them in my fridge. They truly are scrumptious and so easy to reach for whenever I need a sweet treat (aka multiple times a day!) Plus, they are extremely easy to make! Trust me, with a newborn baby I only have time to make simple and quick recipes.

Allergen-Friendly Energy Bites
Another great benefit of these lactation energy bites is that they can easily be made allergen friendly. Since I’m currently not eating dairy or soy (read up about why I’m dairy and soy free while breastfeeding) this is a huge perk! I use Enjoy Life chocolate chips for my energy bites. If you’re allergic to nuts you could substitute the peanut butter for the same amount of sun butter. All of the ingredients I use are also gluten free, just be sure to check the ingredients first if that is something you’re avoiding.
Without further ado, here is the recipe!

Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Lactation Energy Bites
Prep Time: 10 min | Total Time: 45 min | Yield: 30 bites
INGREDIENTS
- 2 cups rolled oats
- 1 cup of chocolate chips (Enjoy Life is allergen free)
- 1 cup of creamy peanut butter (sun butter can be substituted)
- 3/4 cup ground flaxseed meal
- 2/3 cup honey
- 1 1/2 tbsp chia seeds
- 2 tsp vanilla
- 1 scoop Vital Proteins collagen peptides (20g)
INSTRUCTIONS
- In the bowl of a KitchenAid mixer (or any large bowl), add all ingredients.
- Stir until well combined.
- Cover & move mixture into the fridge for 30 min. I’ve found the ingredients stick together better if you refrigerate them first.
- Using a spoon or your hands, roll into 1″ balls. (I like to make some a little smaller and others a little larger, so I can grab whichever size I feel like eating when the time comes!)
- Store in an air tight container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
