I’ve never been a huge proponent for New Year’s resolutions. In all reality, I’ve met very few people who actually fulfill their New Year’s resolutions. If you are an exception to this, I salute you! But, I do enjoy the fresh start that a new year brings and this year more than ever I wanted to set some goals for myself.
Reflecting on Goals from 2020
Last year I had one main goal, which was to create a healthy daily routine as a stay-at-home mom. Between not getting enough sleep (baby life) and transitioning from my teaching career to taking care of Millie full-time, most of my days in 2019 were a blur. I worked hard in 2020 to focus on getting enough sleep, creating a daily routine for me and Millie, establishing a cleaning rotation for our home, and making sure that Brent and I have at least 1 hour a day to relax together after Camila goes to sleep. These changes brought so much happiness and peace to our lives, so I wanted to set goals in 2021 that do the same.
Creating Achievable Yearly Goals
I must say, it has been hard to narrow down my 2021 goals. As usual, I want to do it ALL…exercise, eat healthy, daily activity time with Millie, weekend family activities, monthly date nights, read a book a month, less time on social media, attend Sunday mass online until the pandemic is over, no phones out around Camila…and the list goes on and on. I have a feeling I’m not the only one who feels this way, always wanting to improve and do more things that bring me joy. But, I wanted to narrow down my yearly goals to actionable ones that I truly feel I can accomplish. Here is what I came up with:
3 Simple Goals for 2021
- Exercise once a week. I know once a week sounds like nothing to most people, but I honestly haven’t worked out in 10 months. I do take Millie out for walks typically 5-7 days a week and I’m constantly on my feet chasing her around. But, I know the importance of good health and exercise is a category I need to work on. So, I’m starting with a small goal that I feel confident I can achieve.
- Cook more. Although I love baking, Brent is typically the one who cooks dinner for our family. We do our best to eat real, whole foods most of the time and Brent is excellent at creating meals from theses foods. I, on the other hand, am not nearly as skilled in the kitchen. Now that I’ve created a solid daily routine at home, I am hoping to find time to learn and cook more often.
- More time for self-care. I’m willing to bet that almost every woman has lost a little bit of self-care after becoming a mother. It’s natural instinct to put your children first, after all, they need us to survive. Yet, now that I am getting sleep and have a well-established daily routine, I am hoping to make self-care more of a priority in 2021. For me this might include reading for enjoyment more often, eating foods that give me energy, visiting/zooming with friends once a week, prioritizing sleep, or even relaxing in bed watching Netflix while Brent plays with Millie. Who knows, I might even paint my nails for the first time in many years!
New Year’s Resolutions in 2021
A few days ago I asked on Instagram what everyone’s New Year’s resolutions and goals were. There were some wonderful responses including:
- Journal more.
- Eat more vegetables.
- Read one book a month.
- Get closer to God.
- Complete a workout every day.
- Feel stronger.
- Limit time spent on social media.
- Be kind to myself and instead of focusing on losing weight, focus on listening to what my body needs.
